Is Gyarados worth it in emerald?

February 2023 · 2 minute read

Absolutely. Gyarados is a great Pokemon, even in the competitive scene. It’s incredibly powerful, it’s durable, it’s decently fast, and it has enough in its movepool that it can effectively take on most things. It being a fairly fast offensive Pokemon also makes it effective when playing through the game’s main story.

What moves should I teach Gyarados?

The best moves for Gyarados are Waterfall and Hydro Pump when attacking Pokémon in Gyms. This move combination has the highest total DPS and is also the best moveset for PVP battles.

Is Twister a good move for Gyarados Emerald?

After his buff, Gyarados is actually good to stick in high level gyms due to his top 5 CP. And although terrible at defending in general, twister is a lot harder to dodge than hydro pump. I liken it to a weaker (but still decent) Water Pulse.

Is Thrash good for Gyarados?

Now, Gyarados don’t have many skills that it can learn naturally but whatever it can are stupendously powerful. Without any TM, I usually go with Hydropump (Water), Twister (Dragon), Bite (Dark) and Thrash (Normal). Using TM24 Dragon Breath in place Twister is also a good choice.
